Art meets Science on World TB Day

Friday, 24 March, 2017

To acknowledge World TB Day on March 24th, 2017, SANTHE and the Africa Research Health Institute (AHRI) hosted functions to both officially open the 2017 Wellcome Image Awards exhibition at AHRI’s Durban, South Africa site, as well as host the first KwaZulu-Natal screenings of the Wellcome/HMMI/PEPFAR/USAID/Management Sciences for Health sponsored “Lucky Specials” feature film – a story about a small-time cover band from a dusty South African town, who experience serious problems when their lead singer is struck down with TB.

The premiere screenings included performances from one of the stars of the film, Blondie Makhene, together with musician Brendan Jury – who wrote the score; and VIP guests for both evenings included US Consul General Frances Chisholm, and AHRI Principal Investigator, Professor Adrie Steyn, one of the science consultants for the film.
