Denis Chopera, SANTHE Programme Executive Manager, recently emerged as “Strategic Business Challenge Winner” of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), University of Pretoria, Leadership Acceleration Programme.
The programme, led by senior faculty from GIBS and other experts in the field, spans 9 days divided over three months. It is specifically designed to equip high-performing individuals with leadership and management tools necessary to perform optimally within their chosen careers.
Chopera’s winning idea was to install communal, possibly portable, showers for the 200 000 residents of Alex – a 6,91km2 township in the Gauteng province of South Africa, commonly known as "Gomorrah" among locals, and one of the poorest urban areas in the country. The residents would then by charged a nominal fee of R5 each to use the showers in order to make the practice sustainable. Since they currently bath by repeatedly queuing to collect buckets of water at communal taps, it is highly likely that they would take to the idea and it would be successful.
Chopera is yet to complete the last phase of the course in early December. However, he says that so far, the course has left him feeling challenged, enthused and inspired.
