Schools visit SANTHE 'headquarters'

Wednesday, 31 May, 2017

In the last two months, SANTHE and the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), based in Durban, South Africa, have hosted visits to AHRI’s laboratories by learners from local secondary schools – namely, the Umkhumbane Schools Project, Codemakers and the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

Pupils were taken on a tour of the institute, and given a crash course introduction to microfluidics, and their research. They got to do a hands-on DNA extraction experiment (from a banana) and were also treated to their own private screening of the Wellcome/HMMI/PEPFAR/USAID/Management Sciences for Health sponsored “Lucky Specials” feature film – a story about a small-time cover band from a dusty South African town, who experience serious problems when their lead singer is struck down with TB.
