Elizabeth Bukusi is a clinical researcher and senior academic with extensive expertise in obstetrics, gynaecology, epidemiology and global health. She earned her medical degree and Master’s in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of Nairobi in Kenya, followed by an MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Washington, USA. She also holds a postgraduate diploma in Research Ethics from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s in Bioethics from the Centre for Bioethics and Culture in Karachi, Pakistan.
She serves as Chief Research Officer and Senior Principal Clinical Research Scientist, and is an Associate Research Professor at the University of Washington in the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Global Health. She also holds honorary and adjunct academic appointments at Aga Khan University in Nairobi and the University of California, San Francisco.
Her research focuses on sexually transmitted infections, reproductive health, and HIV prevention, care and treatment. She has contributed to national and international scientific advisory bodies, including Kenya’s National AIDS Control Council HIV Prevention Task Force and WHO advisory structures in reproductive health. She has also served on the Board of the South African Medical Research Council and is an elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
