Bernard Ssentalo Bagaya

Bernard Ssentalo Bagaya has extensive experience in clinical trials research and basic sciences, with expertise in immunology, virology and molecular biology assays. This experience was developed through a four-year AITRP NIH-FIC PhD Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA, and more than 12 years of involvement in HIV and other vaccine clinical trials conducted within multinational research collaborations.
He has held several research leadership positions, including Laboratory Supervisor at the Makerere University Walter Reed Project, and later Laboratory Director and Country Executive Director at the UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Programme in Entebbe, Uganda. Since 2013, he has served as faculty at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, where he teaches and mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students. His research interests focus on translating basic science discoveries into practical health solutions for low-resource settings. He is committed to advancing scientific capacity through research, teaching and mentorship, with a particular emphasis on developing the next generation of African scientists.
