Henrik Kløverpris

Henrik Kløverpris is a faculty member at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban, South Africa, where he leads a laboratory linked to multiple gastrointestinal tissue cohorts. He also maintains a laboratory at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

His research focuses on mucosal immune responses to viral infections and vaccinations, with a particular emphasis on HIV infection in human tissue sites critical to disease pathology. He investigates how long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) is associated with persistent immune dysfunction, including chronic immune activation, and how immune function may be restored following complex chronic viral infections.

His work is especially relevant to understanding HIV-related tissue pathology and its implications for non-communicable diseases in ageing populations, particularly in rural sub-Saharan Africa. To address these questions, he has developed clinical research infrastructure to study the mucosal immune system in high-infection and multimorbidity settings. A key focus of his research is the study of HIV reservoirs at mucosal barriers and associated lymphoid tissues, with the aim of informing strategies for HIV cure and remission.
