Robert Lukande

Robert Lukande is a medical doctor and Senior Lecturer as well as Specialist Pathologist in the Department of Pathology at the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, where he has served since 2006. He trained in medicine and pathology at Makerere University and has further received short-term training in infectious disease pathology, dermatopathology, and gynaecological cytopathology at institutions including Johns Hopkins University, the University of California San Francisco, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, USA.

He is committed to advancing pathology training and practice in Uganda and across East, Central, and Southern Africa, and currently serves as President of the International Academy of Pathology – East African Division, alongside membership in several other professional societies.

His research focuses on determining causes of death and investigating HIV reservoirs in individuals on long-term antiretroviral therapy in Uganda. This work aims to improve understanding of viral persistence and contribute to strategies aimed at achieving HIV eradication and ultimately an HIV-free world without lifelong ART.
