Justen Manasa is a translational scientist with over 20 years of experience focused on understanding viruses, improving disease testing and monitoring, and addressing health challenges in Africa. His work focuses on viral evolution and drug resistance, alongside the development and implementation of improved diagnostic tools for diseases such as HIV, TB and COVID-19, as well as their interactions with non-communicable conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
He is particularly interested in syndemics in resource-limited settings and in strengthening laboratory systems, advanced training of healthcare personnel, and the development of innovative, context-appropriate health solutions, including low-cost HIV drug resistance tests and precision medicine tools tailored for African populations.
His research has contributed to regional HIV drug resistance monitoring and improved access to diagnostic tools. He has secured several million dollars in research and training grants and has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications. Through his work, he aims to strengthen health systems, reduce health inequalities and improve access to effective healthcare across Africa.
