Ugochukwu Jacob Anyaneji is a PhD student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, affiliated with the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP).
He has training across multiple biomedical science disciplines, including an MSc in Virology, a BSc in Human Anatomy, a BSc Honours in Medical Microbiology, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
His research focuses on HIV latency and the mechanisms by which the virus persists in the body despite antiretroviral therapy. In particular, he investigates natural products derived from fungi as potential latency-reversing agents that could help “unmask” hidden HIV reservoirs, with the aim of contributing to HIV cure strategies.
His work combines natural product research with modern laboratory approaches to explore new therapeutic possibilities for HIV, with a strong focus on generating solutions relevant to populations most affected by the epidemic.
