Mayibongwe Mzingwane

Mayibongwe Mzingwane holds a PhD in Medical Virology from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, and an MSc in Medical Microbiology from the University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe. He is based at the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, and also serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pathology at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe.
His research focuses on HIV virology, immunology, and the molecular epidemiology of viral infections. In particular, he studies viral determinants of HIV-1 subtype C persistence and drug resistance patterns in both ART-naïve and ART-experienced individuals, including within anatomic and cellular reservoirs. This work contributes to HIV cure research by identifying potential viral and cellular targets for therapeutic intervention in latent infection.
Prior to his academic career, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry in quality assurance, where he led microbiology, documentation, and process control systems.
