Janet Seeley

Janet Seeley is a social anthropologist by training and holds a PhD in the discipline from the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. She is Professor and Head of the Department of Global Health and Development at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK, having joined the institution in April 2014.

Prior to this, she was Professor of International Development at the University of East Anglia, UK, and worked for the UK Department for International Development (now FCDO) for 13 years. She has extensive international research experience spanning Kenya, Uganda, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Malawi, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Since the late 1980s, she has been actively engaged in research on the social dimensions of health, including four years with the Medical Research Council in Uganda (1989–1993), where she established social science research within the unit. She returned to Uganda in 2008 to lead the social science programme until 2022. She has worked with the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in South Africa since 2014, supporting social science research and capacity strengthening, and is an AHRI faculty member for social science.
