Patrick Mokgethi is a PhD candidate focusing on HIV research, with training in Biological Sciences (BSc and MPhil) and a strong foundation in genomics, virology, and molecular biology. He has developed laboratory expertise in nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and sequencing technologies, contributing to research on HIV drug resistance and HIV cure-related studies, including co-authorship of several scientific publications.

His current doctoral research investigates HIV strains among non-citizens in Botswana, focusing on HIV-1 drug resistance profiles and the phylogenetic relatedness of viral strains compared to those found in citizens. This work aims to improve understanding of transmission dynamics and resistance patterns in underserved and mobile populations.

His broader research interests include HIV cure research, infectious diseases, health systems strengthening, and implementation research, with a particular focus on improving health outcomes in underserved populations. He is highly motivated to build a long-term career in HIV genomics and infectious disease research.

SANTHE is a pan-African consortium, with the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) serving as the operational site lead and funded by the Science for Africa Foundation through the DELTAS Africa programme; the Gates Foundation; Gilead Sciences Inc.; Aidsfonds; and the Ragon Institute of Mass General, MIT, and Harvard.
