Paradise Madlala is a Faculty Member and Lecturer at the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP). Madlala is interested in understanding molecular mechanisms that govern HIV latency at the transcriptional level, the roadblock to HIV cure development. The development HIV cure remains a high-unmet medical need for approximately 38 million people living with HIV globally, with Sub-Saharan Africa bearing the heaviest burden of the HIV epidemic. Finding a cure for HIV requires a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that govern HIV latency. Madlala's laboratory, therefore, is working towards finding a cure by focusing on genetic variation of viral and host factors that mediate viral gene transcription.
