Project Name: Assessing risk factors and contexts for concomitant drug use of Medically Assisted Therapy recipients enrolled in the Malindi Sub-County Hospital

Worldwide, 27 million people are estimated to be problem drug users with almost half of them being injecting drug users (IDU). A total of 1.65 million IDU are living with HIV. In Kenya, IDU is increasing especially along the coast. Methadone assisted therapy (MAT) is one of the best evidenced interventions for drug addiction and HIV prevention. Three MAT programmes are active in Kenya. The programme in Malindi started in 2015. Mahmoud's study assessed risk factors and contexts for concomitant drug use of MAT recipients enrolled in the Malindi sub-county Hospital, and captured staff views on the contexts of concomitant drug use and suggestions to manage the condition. It was envisaged that the results would improve care and enhance treatment of IDU in Kenya.
