Marcus Altfeld is Director of the Department “Virus Immunology” at Heinrich Pette Institute in Hamburg, Germany. He is interested in the characterisation of protective immune responses against HIV. His research focuses on the mechanisms of NK cell driven elimination of HIV infected cells, gender differences in viral infections, and the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines against HIV.
Altfeld also serves as an honorary professor at UKZN and is involved in mentoring students and Post-docs since 2001. He sees SANTHE as an outstanding opportunity to continue and expand these mentoring activities in collaborations with the African partners involved.
