Prevention is the best medicine but it can never be achieved without informed, evidence-based interventions, research, good health systems, as well as informed policy making. As a citizen of Botswana, one of the most hard-hit countries globally by the HIV pandemic, as well as Tuberculosis (TB) with increasing drug resistance, Lorato Maje has since her high school years had an interest in understanding the etiology of HIV, “A privilege I got partly in my Virology studies during my years of study for a BSc degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.” It has also always been of interest to Maje to understand what makes preventive efforts fail and what could be done to help address these failures. “Is it because our health systems are a total failure, or is it simply due to the fact that there may be ignorance in our communities as a whole? I wish to understand the HIV prevention challenges among adolescents and youth.” Her current research project is entitled, “Association between vaginal hygiene practices and bacterial vaginosis among young South African women: a risk for HIV acquisition.”
