Lucy Mupfumi is a PhD research fellow at BHP. Prior to this, she co-ordinated the clinical laboratory at the institute where samples from ACTG, IMPAACT and HPTN network trials are processed. She has previously received a SACORE (Southern African Consortium for Research Excellence) award, as well as a Wellcome Trust initiative, for her Masters studies. Her thesis was on the impact of GeneXpert MTB/RIF on ART-associated TB and mortality in patients initiating ART. Mupfumi's research interests are in understanding the host pathogen interaction in co-infected patients and bio marker discovery as a means of improving the diagnosis of TB among HIV infected and paediatric patients. The burden of TB remains unacceptably high in these groups and access to improved diagnostics will be key if the global goal of elimination by 2050 is to be achieved.
