University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Durban, South Africa

Doty Ojwach was born in Kenya and pursued her basic training Bsc (Hons) Biomedical science degree at Maseno University, relocating to South Africa to further her studies. She obtained her MmedSci degree in 2016 and a PhD degree in medical virology in April 2019 from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa. During her studies, she explored how the HIV virus changes its genetic make-up to evade recognition by the immune system and how these changes impact the virus’ ability to multiply optimally. “It is important to know the weak spots of the virus so that they can be targeted for drug therapy and vaccine design,” she says. “I enjoy science. It’s very exciting because you find something new and interesting and each day is never the same. Your knowledge is renewed daily.”
