Thando Mbali Zulu

Trainee Type:
Associated Institution:
University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa

Thando Zulu completed her undergraduate studies in Microbiology and Genetics and went on to graduate with Honours degree in Medical Microbiology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Having come from a small town of Pietermaritzburg where the HIV-1 prevalence is at a shattering hig, she hopes to contribute significantly towards the fight against this pandemic. Her project is based on characterising HIV-1 near-full length genomes among a cohort of drug users from Kenya in order to determine their subtype diversity. The characterisation and understanding of these subtypes and recombinants of HIV-1 at whole genome level is key for the development of an improved effective vaccine design.
