Dr Motswedi Anderson

Trainee Type:

Motswedi Anderson’s research interests are in viral hepatitis (B, C, D and E) and human immunodeficiency virus. Her current project is entitled, “Occult hepatitis B virus infections in HIV-1 infected individuals in Botswana: incidence, kinetics and mechanisms”. Her focus is on understanding the biology of occult hepatitis B virus (hepatitis B surface antigen negative in the presence of detectable hepatitis B virus DNA). It is through better understanding of this phenomenon that diagnostic and preventative strategies can be developed. She believes elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030 is unattainable if occult hepatitis B infections are left behind. She completed her PhD in Biological Sciences at University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana, in 2018 with a project entitled, "Prevalence and molecular characterisation of hepatitis B virus infection in Botswana.” She completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa in 2005. She has been with BHP since 2006. She aspires to be a renowned researcher and to play a key role in the elimination of viral hepatitis in Botswana and the region.
