Phinius’s project evaluates restoration of the immune system of HIV-infected individuals after initiation of Antiretroviral therapy (ART). The aim of the study is to determine CD4 T-cell count, CD8 T-cell count and CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio dynamics in a retrospective study of 300 HIV positive adult participants. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare median CD4/CD8 T cell ratios between age groups (≤ 35 years old vs > 35 years), gender, hepatitis B (HBV) status, HIV viral load category (≤ 400 copies/ml vs. >400 copies/ml) and CD4 T-cell category (≤ 250 cells/ml vs >250 cells/ml). Linear regression was performed to explore the relationship between CD4/CD8 T-cell ratios and CD4 and CD8 T-cells in 24 months. Median time to CD4/CD8 T-cell ratio normalisation was calculated from baseline. Analysis was carried out on STATA® 11.
Future plans are to compare senescence biomarkers and cytokines between the CD4/CD8 ratio normalised and non-normalised patients by use of Intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) and flow cytometry.
